RITTEL'S Standard Tanning Formulas
The following formulas have been used successfully by RITTELS, and are considered Basic Standard RITTEL tanning formulations. They are intended to be used on previously pickled, neutralized, and rinsed skins. In all the formulas - the amounts are based on their weight. For accuracy - use a weighing scale and always measure the Ph levels upon mixing the tan, as well as several hours later. Apply Oil after tanning any skin in order to achieve softness and to keep its size. Keep the temperature of the tanning solution between 65-80 degrees Fahrenhiet. The usage percentages listed below are based on drained wet skin weight.
EZ-100 TAN
Ph =4.0 Tf =70 Deg.
For every 1 Lb. of Wet Drained Skin Weight, add:
2 Qts. Of Water (425%)
1/2 Oz. of EZ-100 (3%)
4 Ozs. of Salt (25%)
Allow the skins to tan for 16-20 hours. No longer than 24 hours.
SOF-TAN
Ph =4.0 Tf =70 Deg.
For every 1 Lb. of Wet Drained Skin Weight, add:
2 Qts. Of Water (425%)
5 Ozs. of SOF- TAN (30%)
4 Ozs. of Salt (25%)
Allow the skins to tan for 16-20 hours. No longer than 24 hours.
LUTAN F (N)
Ph =4.0 Tf =70 Deg.
For every 1 Lb. of Wet Drained Skin Weight, add:
2 Qts. Of Water (425%)
1 Oz. of Lutan F (N) (6%)
4 Ozs. of Salt (25%)
Allowthe skins to tan for 16-20 hours. No longer than 24 hours.
KWIK-TAN
Ph =4.0 Tf =70 Deg.
For every 1 Lb. of Wet Drained Skin Weight, add:
2 Qts. Of Water (425%)
6 Ozs. of KWIK-TAN(37.5%)
4 Ozs. of Salt (25%)
This formula is for using the KWIK-TAN as a separate solution, and not in the Pickle. Allowthe skins to tan for 16-24 hours. No longer than 24 hours.
ALUM TAN
Ph =3.8-4.0 Tf = 70
For every 1 Lb. of Wet Drained Skin Weight, add:
2 Qts. Of Water (425%)
3.2 Ozs.of Alum* (20%)
4 Ozs. of Salt (25%)
* Aluminum Sulphate, Ammonium Aluminum Sulphate, or Potassium Aluminum Sulphate can be used interchangeably in this formula. Use Soda Ash to adjust the Ph level. Allow the skins to tan for 3-5 days.
Hydro-T Tan
Ph =4.0 Tf =70 Deg.
For every 1 Lb. of Wet Drained skin Weight, add:
2 Qts. of Water (425%)
0.8 Ozs. of Hydro-T (5%)
5 Ozs. of Salt (30%)
Basyntan DLE Powder
Ph =4.0 Tf =70 Deg.
For every 1 Lb. of Wet Drained Skin Weight, add:
2 Qts. of Water (425%)
2 Ozs. of Basyntan DLE Powder (12.5%)
4 Ozs. of Salt (25%)
Chromitan FM
Ph =4.0 Tf =70 Deg.
For every 1 Lb. of Wet Drained Skin Weight After a 1 Day soak in a Saftee Acid Pickle, Add:
2 Ozs. of Chromitan FM (12.5%)
Soak for 8-12 hours, then add:
Sodium Formate to raise Ph to a 4.0
Soak skins for 20-32 hours.
LUTAN CR (N)
Ph =4.0 Tf =70 Deg.
For every 1 Lb. of Wet Drained Skin Weight, mix:
2 Qts. Of Water (425%)
8 Ozs. of Salt (50%)
0.25 fl. Ozs. of 85% Formic Acid (1.5%)
Adjust to a 3.0 - Pickle for 24 hours.
Now add: 0.25 Ozs. of Lutan CR (N) (1.5%)
Soak 2 hours
Now add: 0.25 Ozs. of Lutan CR (N) (1.5%)
Soak 24 hours
Add 5 feeds, 30 minutes apart of:
0.5 Ozs. of Sodium Acetate (3.1%)
1 Oz. of Sodium Bicarbonate (6.3%)
